RARE Fossil Fern, Cycad, Palm Petrified Wood - Ashicaulis,
Osmundaceae, Tempskya - Henry Mountains
Ferns are an ancient plant group know as (pteridophyta) which likely gave rise to seed plants. they were dominant during the Pennsylvanian & Mississippian Periods. Fossil records contain evidence of "seed ferns" that bore seeds directly on the fronds know as (pteridospermophyta).
Osmundaceae are unique
in that their small rhizomes or stems grow upright not horizontal.
They also
support a cluster of fronds.
Tempskya is a form genus for the false trunks of a tree fern. The false trunks being made up of loosely organized leaf bases & stems encased in a dense mat of roots, known from Cretaceous period rocks. Many were found in Utah.
You won't find these at your local rock shop!
